The Vivah Sanskaar or Wedding Ceremony The Vivaha (The 15th of the 16 generally practiced Samskaras)The Hindu marriage is a permanent and stable union, not a temporary contract to serve the momentary physical demand or to enjoy good company for a period of time and then lapse at a time of the slightest inconvenience. It is a Life-Long union which stands various mishaps only to grow stronger and more stable. The Hindu marriage is not a passport for physical indulgence but a human institution consecrated by the Divine and witnessed by man aiming at moderation in the conjugal life. The marriage institution helps one to distinguish between truth and untruth, darkness and light, destruction and eternity. The transformation of materialism to spiritualism is the goal of the Vivah Sanskaar. It is in this connection the pair pray that they will be united even in the next birth. The bride's father prays for the happiness of the two asks the devtas present to successfully bring their hearts together as two rivers meet.
